Which Bathroom Countertops Are RightFor Me?

Bathroom Countertops

When researching bathroomcountertops the amount of information can be daunting. It is my aim to cut through all of that and give you some great ideas for which counter top might be best for you.

So, you've chosen a finish for your accessories and have decided on a cherry bathroom sink vanity cabinet. The next question is, "what do I put on top"?

The answer to this question begins with an idea of what kind of usage and who the intended users will be. for example a glass vanity top would be a poor choice for a kids bathroom while a double bathroom sink made of granite has no place in a small powder room. Obviously. So think first of your intended purpose for the bathroom.

By and large the most common materials for bathroom countertops are solid surface materials like cultured marble and granite. Cultured onyx vanity tops, as well as cultured granite and cultured marble, are cast polymer solid surface countertop. This is an extremely durable and beautiful choice for just about any bathroom countertops. These composite materials stand up to all but the most abusive situations and look great for years and years with minimal care. The styles and colors available will complement just about any decor and are usually manufactured locally to reduce lead times and service issues.

If, however, your tastes run a little more to the high end of things you may want to investigate a solid surface countertop like silestone or maybe even a natural stone. Silestone is an excellent material for bathroom countertops. It is manufactured from quartz particles which make it extremely hard and scratch resistant. Marble and granite vanity tops both make good surfaces for bathroom vanity tops. There are a few issues with these types of surfaces though. The biggest issue is staining. All natural stone is porous in nature that means that no matter the brilliance of the polishing there are microscopic pits and fissure that need to be sealed in order to prevent staining. this has become less of a concern with newer commercial grade Teflon based sealants but is still something to consider.

For a really unique bathroom sink a granite vessel sink coupled with a furniture vanity could be a nice choice. This setup, as with any vessel sink would require a special faucet but the effect is very dramatic. Another interesting option for added drama is a glass sink or glass vanity top. Glass bathroom sinks are incredibly durable and come in a variety of shapes sizes and colors. Glass is an ideal material for a bathroom due to it's nonporous nature and it's easy clean-ability.

Space is always at a premium in a bathroom, if this is the case and you don't mind sacrificing the storage under a vanity cabinet a pedestal sink may be just the answer for you. Bathroom pedestal sinks do lack the counter surface of a large vanity top but do have an immense amount of class and style and many have plenty of space for the essentials like toothbrushes and razors.

As always when selecting products for your bathroom remodel project pay attention to the warranties offered by the various manufacturers and take into consideration the special care requirements that may be needed for the more exotic materials.
