Cheap Flooring:
The Holy Grail of Bathroom Remodeling?
Cheap flooring is sort of the holy grail of bathroom remodeling. I usually advise against scrimping too much in this area but sometimes it just so happens that the budget for a project needs to be cut and this is the place to do it.
Bathroom floors come under a lot of wear and tear from moisture, cleaning chemicals and foot traffic. Keep this in mind as you select your new bathroom floor. By first selecting your bathroom flooring type it will be easier to find cheap flooring. One of the least expensive types of flooring is traditional sheet vinyl. Sheet vinyl can be a bit tricky to install though.
A good compromise would be adhesive vinyl tiles. I usually recommend against these as a bathroom flooring option but they’ll do in a pinch. I usually like to steer towards ceramic tile flooring for a bathroom. It can usually be had for a pretty low price if you’re willing to do some homework.
One of the first places to start looking for cheap flooring is at your local home improvement store. There is a good chance that they will have a selection of floor materials and coverings that have been discontinued. Discontinued items are a good way to save a few bucks. The only problem is that sometimes there is not enough of the valuable resource to get the job done. Try mixing and matching patterns and colors for a unique look as well as a way to extend the limited resources found in the discontinued section.
Another great resource for cheap flooring for your bathroom is the internet. Of course… that’s how you found me! One of the drawbacks to this amazing development of recent times is that you can’t see what you’re buying before you buy it. Another drawback is the shipping charges associated with the flooring material.
To remedy the first issue, take a trip to the store. With the brand and style you saw on the internet in your hands you can go take a look at the texture and the colors in person. Make sure you have made a call ahead of time to find out which local store carries the brand and style you saw online.
Once you’re there be sure to ask if the store has a price match guarantee. Sometimes if you have the advertised price of the exact item with you they will meet and even beat the price you found online. Be tenacious here, these local stores need your business. Let them know that you are aware of this and they will usually help you out.
Knowing exactly what you will pay for the tile with shipping is necessary. The local store may have the same tile at a slightly higher price but after figuring the shipping charges and taking into account the return policy of the online store, it may be worth it to shop local.
It may take a little extra leg-work but cruising around town for a bit can save a bundle in shipping charges and who knows, you might just find out that the local store has the exact same pricing without all those shipping charges.
Visiting a flooring showroom may also lead to the discovery of new and exciting ideas for your bathroom floor too. I know that whenever I go with a friend to the store the creative juices start flowing and we sometimes end up in a completely different direction than we were heading before.
Cheap flooring is not always the best flooring though. Really invest some time and energy here deciding where to cut the budget if you need to. You’ll be happy you did!!
